YOUTUBE FIND OF THE WEEK
with Luciano Marziali

Bill Evans on classical guitar – might give you pause at first, right? But not for long, because after a few bars, it becomes pretty clear: this works.

“For Nenette” appeared in 1978 on Evans’ album New Conversations and is dedicated to his wife, Nenette Zazzara Evans. So, strictly speaking, it’s piano music from a completely different genre. But that’s exactly what makes the video interesting.

Luciano Marziali arranged the piece for guitar himself, while preserving enough of Bill Evans’ essence: the harmonies, the subtle shifts, that floating sensation between jazz and an almost silent, concentrated stillness.

What we like: It sounds like music that has found a new home on our instrument.

Be sure to give it a listen.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK
with Laura Mazon Franqui

After focusing on orchestral music in the last two issues, this time we’ve been captivated by the debut album Rojo by Cuban guitarist Laura Mazon Franqui. As a tribute to Latin American and Spanish guitar music, she has chosen pieces that reflect her musical journey and have had a profound influence on her. Barrios, Turina, Brouwer, Morel, Carlos Rafael Rivera, Claudia Montero. These are not unfamiliar names, nor are the pieces unfamiliar.

But the way Laura interprets them has taken us on a journey through a whole range of emotions. She takes her time with expression, tone, and interpretation, while simultaneously mastering technically demanding passages with a lightness that puts the listener at ease.

Head out into the sunshine, put on your headphones, and enjoy!
